You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.
Psalm 63:1
In my previous Blog I looked at the question where am I going, and concluded I definitely have a God-given direction, and I concluded asking God was my best way of finding out. surely, then, I must earnestly seek Him, and thirst for him with my whole being.
So what does that mean! Without God there is no hope, we are condemned to death, the wages of sin are death (Romans 6:23). In other words without God there is no point to anything, you’re born you work you die. But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23). So logic, as well as the Bible, tells us don’t store up treasure on earth as our life on earth is transitory and only for a short time and moths, vermin and thieves will destroy our earthly treasure. Instead build treasures in heaven where we will spend the rest of eternity. (Matthew 6:19-20).
For there to be hope we must diligently seek God, to thirst and long for him, even in the desert of our despair. So that “The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy.” (Isaiah 35:1-2).
The Lord said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’
1 Kings 19:11-13
Our “Desert” is such a loud and noisy place, television and media telling us what to do and what to think. We live in a society where so-called wise people tell us what is politically correct. Also we are told that those in authority over us are not responsible it is always someone else’s fault, usually the little man. We are encouraged to believe in ourselves. Also, half the world believes there is no God, the other half believes that their god is telling them to kill everyone else who does not believe in their god.
What does this all lead us to. A world without true love and world where no one loves their neighbour as themselves. A world of divorce, a world of loneliness, and world of continual war and strife. We are so deafened by the world of wind, earthquake and fire, that we have forgotten how to listen the gentle whisper that is God. The God who love us and wants us to be be filled with his Joy and for us to love one another as ourselves (Matthew 22:39).
But after the storm comes a calm, a calm where the lost sheep can hear and recognise the voice of the “Good Shepherd” (John 10:1-6). Jesus is the way, Jesus is the truth and he is the life and no-one comes to God except through Him (John 14:6), and He is the light in the darkness and the darkness will never over come him (John 1:5).
So, my fellow lost sheep, listen for the gentle voice of Jesus and you WILL know the way.
